notes View from below of a frond of Cheilanthes (with inset image giving more detail for scales and pinnule segments). I believe this is Cheilanthes covillei. However I'm not familiar with Cheilanthes clevelandii, which is sympatric with C. covillei in this area and is hard for me to unequivocally rule out, based on the keys and descriptions I've pored over in FNA, Jepson, Munz, and Wiggins (Flora of Baja California). [NOTE: Cross-reference my comments below with the other three photos I've posted here.] Arguing for C. covillei is the primary character in couplet 10 of the FNA key ( http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=1&taxon_id=106570#KEY-1-10 ) which, paraphrased, states: scales on lower side of pinnae not *visibly* ciliate (the scales of covillei are said to be ciliate, but *only at their bases*... which are hidden because the scales are tightly overlapping. In contrast, clevelandii's scales are said to be visibly ciliate beyond their hidden bases). Also arguing for covillei is Wiggin's last key break for Cheilanthes which states: ''Pinnae 5-12 pairs;...covillei'' versus ''Pinnae 12-19 pairs; ... clevelandii''. On the other hand, Jepson and Munz indicate that covillei has fronds 'crowded' (vs. 'well-separated' for clevelandii) and that the scales exceed and obscure view (from below) of the green beed-like pinnule segments (vs. only ''nearly'' exceed and obsure view of the green segments in clevelandii). These characters make clevelandii seem a better fit for the plant in my photos. Nevertheless, weighting all this...my overall impression is that this is more likely C. covillei than C. clevelandii. If you are knowledgeable in distinguishing these two species, I welcome your comments. Please contact me to correct or confirm.
