Rubiaceae
notes A distinctively caespitose & spiny-leaved Galium species that has an affinity for serpentine substrates. Subspecies placement appears ambiguous here. The Jepson eFlora subspecies range maps suggest G. a. ssp. gatense (range maps for the other subspecies don't include the locale here). But the Galium key indicates that subspecies gatense has ''internode generally > leaf'' and ''plant open, occasionally hairy, main stem obvious''. Those characters don't fit here. Aside from the range maps, this seems to fit better with the nominate subspecies G. a. ssp. andrewsii, and there's a voucher placed as that in the vicinity where this was found. But due to the ambiguity I'm just placing this to species. photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
