  • location   South of the road from Punat to Stara baška settlement; island Krk, Kvarner archipelago (Rijeka region, Croatia)
  • notes   Slo.: Televrinovo ptičje mleko - Habitat: stony grassland with a few scattered low bushes; calcareous ground, almost flat terrain; open, sunny, dry place; elevation 180 m (590 feet); average precipitations 1.000-1.200 mm/year, average temperature 13-15 deg C, Sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region. - Substratum: soil among rocks. - Comment: Most of the species in the genus Ornithogalum are extremely problematic for determination. Taxonomy is very complex and not yet agreed upon by professional botanists. Following Speta (1990) (Ref.2) the plants shown on these pictures appear to belong to species Ornithogalum televrinum Speta. The species is a rare, steno-endemic (it occurs only in a very small area and nowhere else in the world) growing on Kvarner archipelago islands. It was first described in 1990 (Ref.:2, p133). At first it was known only from the island Lošinj, but later it was discovered also on islands Krk and Cres and also on two spots on the Croatia mainland on Biokovo mountains and near the town Imotski (Ref.3, Ref.4). Its name origins from its 'locus classicus' on the slopes of the mountain peak Televrina, one of the peaks of the mountain ridge Osorćica on the island Lošinj. This plant is very similar to more frequent species Ornithogalum collinum Guss. Nevertheless, morphological measurements of to me available pictures and the descriptions of both species (Ref.2) compared to the plants found speak in favor of Ornithogalum televrinum. Ornithogalum collinum has in average somewhat narrower petals (relative to their length), broader bulbs with shorter neck and smaller anthers compared to the corresponding filaments than Ornithogalum televrinum. It also has rugose (wrinkled) surface of the pistils while Ornithogalum televrinum has glabrous pistils. Yet, since the genus is so problematic in terms of species determination, I am not completely sure that my determination is 100% reliable. Too many traits of both species cannot be depicted from available pictures and were also not examined in the field. - Ref.: (1) W.K.
