Kozlek ridge; river Reka valley (Notranjska, Slovenia)notes Slo.: majhnocvetno čmrljeliko mačje uho - syn.: Ophrys tetraloniae Teschner, Ophrys fuciflora subsp. elatior (Paulus) R.Engel & P.Quentin - Habitat: Grassland, overgrown with bushes and scattered trees; moderately inclined mountain slope, southwest aspect; skeletal ground; cretaceous clastic rock (flysh) bedrock; semi-dry, sunny, open place; elevation 453 m (1.490 feet); average precipitations 1.800-2.000 mm/year, average temperature 9-10 deg C, Sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region. - Substratum: soil. - Comment: Naming of plants of genus Ophrys is a hard task (at least for me). These beautiful flowers are extremely variable and such is also their taxonomy, unfortunately. Some taxonomists (lumpers) may recognize a few tens of species in this genus, others (splitters) recognize several hundred species and subspecies (Ref.: 2). Grouping of taxa in larger groups is consequently also different. For an amateur, I see only one way to cope with this situation. One has to decide to which 'school' or literature he will trust and then keep with it (at least for a while). - Ophrys holosericea group (even this group as a group is not generally recognized) is no difference in this sense. Till 2007 only Ophrys holosericea was (fully) recognized in Slovenia (Ref.: 4). Today it seems that three subspecies are considered (Ref.: 6): Ophrys holosericea ssp. holosericea, Ophrys holosericea ssp. tetraloniae and Ophrys holosericea ssp. untchjii. The last two are frequently referred on species level as Ophrys tetraloniae and Ophrys untchjii. But these names are not even present in IUCN and Euro+Med PlantBase, while Catalog of Life recognize them as synonyms of Ophrys fuciflora subsp. elatior. - According to Ref. 2 Ophrys holosericea ssp. tetraloniae has following characteristic traits: relatively small flowers (but in average only about 1 – 2 mm differences with overlapping values of different parts of the flowers compared to other two subspecies), white or pink but not greenish sepals (white, pink or greenish for O. h. ssp. untchjii and O. h. ssp. holosericea), white or pink but not greenish petals (white, pink or greenish for O. h. ssp. untchjii), flowering time in June (in May for O. h. ssp. untchjii and O .h. ssp. holosericea) although I've seen O. h. ssp. tetraloniae and O. h. ssp. untchjii in full bloom at the same time on the same meadow. In addition, flowering time depends much on elevation and other habitat parameters. It seems that there exists not a single 'deterministic', firm discrimination character for these taxa. So, the task it is not an easy one and frequently 'a mission impossible' for a layman with the his first (few) Ophrys encounter(s). - Protected according to: Uredba o zavarovanih prostoživečih rastlinskih vrstah, poglavje A, Uradni list RS, št. 46/2004 (Regulation of protected wild plants, chapter A, Official Gazette of Republic Slovenia, no. 46/2004), (2004).
