location
Lower Trenta valley, right bank of river Soča; between villages Soča and Trenta; near Trenta 2b cottage, East Julian Alps (Posočje, Slovenia)notes Slo.: čašasti jelenovec - Synonymy: Baeomyces pyxidatus (L.) Ach., Cenomyce pyxidata (L.) Ach., Cladonia conchata Nyl. - Habitat: larger calcareous boulder covered by mosses; former, now overgrowing, pasture; calcareous, skeletal, colluvial ground; dry and relatively warm place, in half shade; under a canopy of Tilia platyphyllos, partly protected from direct rain by tree canopy; average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 7-9 deg C, elevations 600 m (1.970 feet), alpine phytogeographical region. - Substratum: mosses on calcareous boulder. - Comment: Cladonia pyxidata is among the most common lichens in our region. The species is quite variable and its cups' shape, podetia surface, as well as color may vary considerably depending on habitat. Particularly the differences between full sun and shady places are significant. It is not always easy to distinguish it from other similar species for me, most notably from Cladonia fimbriata and Cladonia chlorophaea. However, distinct corticate granules within the cusps (see picture 15b and also note English common name) makes me believe the determination of this find is quite reliable. - Ref.: (1) V.
