  • notes   Slo.: dolgolistna naglavka - syn.: Serapias helleborine var. longifolia L., Cephalanthera ensifolia Rich. - Habitat: small, former pasture, now partly overgrown with bushes and trees and surrounded by mixed wood, Picea abies and Fagus sylvatica dominant trees; moderately inclined mountain slope, south aspect; colluvial, calcareous, skeletal ground; elevation 750 m (2.450 feet); average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 6-8 deg C, alpine phytogeographical region. Substratum: soil. Comment: Cephalanthera longifolia is a beautiful and stately orchid sometimes growing up to 60 cm tall. It is a quite common species in mountain regions of Slovenia. Because of its snow-white flowers, which are very conspicuous in shady forests it cannot be overlooked. Apart of not too dark forests it can be found also on their edges and also on open grassy places, where it develops long inflorescence sometimes having more than 20 flowers. Contrary, in shade of woods the plants may have only 4 or 5 flowers. Interestingly, the flowers remain half-closed and almost never open fully. Nevertheless, where the plant grows in large numbers, it displays wonderful vistas. Cephalanthera longifolia is widely distributed Eurasian floral element, which extends from Sweden down to Mediterranean regions including North Africa. Protected according to: Uredba o zavarovanih prostoživečih rastlinskih vrstah, poglavje A, Uradni list RS, št. 46/2004 (Regulation of protected wild plants, chapter A, Official Gazette of Republic Slovenia, no. 46/2004), (2004). Pravilnik o uvrstitvi ogroženih rastlinskih in živalskih vrst v rdeči seznam, Uradni list RS, št. 82/2002 (Regulation of enlisting of endangered plant and animal species onto Red List, Official Gazette of Republic Slovenia, no. 82/2002) (2002). Enlisted in the Slovene Red List of rare and endangered species, marked by 'V' representing a vulnerable species. Ref.: (1) B.
