Off Rancheria Rd, above 6000' in the Greenhorn Mountains (Kern County, California, US)family
Liliaceae
notes Upper portion of a Fritillaria brandegeei plant. I think the plants here may have been growing in a perhaps shadier habitat than usual. The flowering ones were tall and vegetatively rather robust. Low, stalk-less, non-flowering individuals consisting of a large, round, 'nurse-leaf' were also present. This is one of my favorite fritillaries (allowing that such a concept can make sense in a such a genus...where every species is marvelous :-). Like nearly everyone else posting this species on CalPhotos, I owe the pleasure of finding these plants to the gracious assistance of the wonderful botanist and plant explorer, Clyde Golden. (Thanks, Clyde! :-) photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
