plant community 5950’, rocky dolomite W-facing slope, Juniper-Yucca scrubnotes Astragalus newberryi var. castoreus in fruit. Variably recognized, but reported for CA in the E DMoj by Barneby in Intermountain Flora. It occurs E of the Death Valley sink and can be distinguished by range, floristic associations, leaflets and hairs. The hairs are more distinctive in dried collections. Barneby’s key used leaflet # and position to distinguish from var. newberryi, with castoreas having more leaflets arranged along most of the rachis, whereas in var. newberryi the leaflets are fewer and terminal on the rachis. Though there is phenotypic overlap, this appears to be a worthy taxon at the varietal rank. Locally growing w/ Juniperus osteosperma, Artemisia bigelovii, Coleogyne, Opuntia curvospina, O. polyacantha var. hystricina, Coryphantha vivipara rosea, Eriogonum microthecum simpsonii, Arenaria macradenia, Hymenoxys acaulis, Chaetopappa ericioides, Cryptantha tumulosa, Bouteloua eriopoda & Stipa speciosa.camera Olympus SP500UZ
