plant community 5950’, rocky dolomite W-facing slope, Juniper-Yucca scrubnotes Astragalus newberryi var. castoreus in fruit. In this phase, it can resemble A. coccineus, accounting for reports/collections of A. coccineus in the NY Mtns. Variably recognized, but reported for CA in the E DMoj by Barneby in Intermountain Flora, var. castoreas occurs E of the Death Valley sink and can be distinguished by range, floristic associations, leaflets and hairs. Locally growing w/ Juniperus osteosperma, Artemisia bigelovii, Coleogyne, Opuntia curvospina, O. polyacantha var. hystricina, Coryphantha vivipara rosea, Eriogonum microthecum simpsonii, Arenaria macradenia, Hymenoxys acaulis, Chaetopappa ericioides, Cryptantha tumulosa, Bouteloua eriopoda & Stipa speciosa.camera Olympus SP500UZ
