notes Terminal stems of Arctostaphylos imbricata, with its densely imbricate, auriculate leaves and terminal inflorescences. What was unusual and remarkable here were the inflorescences with bright-red corollas...which were somewhat swollen-thickened and ''warty'' with abnormally enlarged and exserted stigmas. Normally A. imbricata has whitish flowers and the stigmas remain included within the corolla until it drops. I dissected a few corollas and found the anthers appeared to be 'frozen' in a pre-dehiscent state. There were no insect larvae within, which seemed to rule out an insect-induced gall. So I'm guessing this was the result of infection by a virus or other microbial pathogen. Note that in some of the other images of this series, in addition to the corollas, the terminal leaves also seemed to be deformed and afflicted. high resolution file https://www.flickr.com/photos/17069890@N03/16218162784/sizes/o/
