Between Mt. Planja, 1.553 m and Mt. Mali vrh, 1.991 m. below forest road east of Planja, Loška Koritnica valley, East Julian Alps (Posočje, Slovenia)notes Slo.: hojeva polževka - Habitat: Mixed mountain forest, predominantly Fagus sylvatica with some large Abies alba and Picea abies, old stands; medium inclined south slope, calcareous bedrock, acid soil (Vaccinium myrtillus), relatively warm place, partly shady, partly protected from direct rain by tree canopies, average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 2-4 deg C, elevation 1.335 m (4.400 feet), alpine phytogeographical region. - Substratum: soil. - Comments: Growing in a large group of over 50 big waxy robust fruitbodies in all stages of development from hemispheric caps to already decayed fruitbodies; pileus diameter 5-15 (22!) cm, 5 to 14 cm tall; taste mild, mushroomy, quite pleasant; smell mild, somewhat acid or rancid?; flesh firm, meaty; SP surprisingly faint, whitish? Spores smooth. Dimensions: 11.4 (SD = 0.9) x 8.3 (SD = 0.7) micr., Q = 1.4 (SD = 0.1), n = 21. Olympus CH20 (Motic B2-211A), NEA 100x/1.25, magnification 1.000 x, oil, in water. Measured spores are much bigger than data from literature (see Excel graph). I do not know whether and how this can be explained (see Ref.:(2)). Also many fruitbodies of this observation were significantly larger than data from literature. It is interesting that other observations of unusually large size and number have been reported this year also from other parts of Slovenia (Ref.:(1)). Can this be a completely wrong determination?
