plant community Mesic forests, cave mouths; higher elevation subalpine and alpinenotes Rare fern endemic to East Maui and the Big Island (Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea). Few plants grow near the top of Mauna Kea yet these were on ledges and in cracks of bedrock on north faces where some moisture is retained in the very dry alpine environment.
