notes topotype (vouchered by my #21233); the leaf bases of previous years growth form a shawl covering the stem crown, which in this view is the white, bulbous structure surmounting the root; the stem crown in this plant shows 'annual' rings (this plant had 21 rings); the leaf bases of the current year's growth are light brown.
