notes Habit of the annual Phacelia douglasii. Note the pinnately-lobed leaves here, which have a 'forward-triangular' aspect somewhat reminiscent of the less deeply lobed (i.e. ''toothed'') leaves of the (now lumped, former variety) P. douglasii var. petrophila. (I'm not saying this should be considered petrophila, which grows along the western edge of the San Joaquin Valley...just noting what appears to me as a visual affinity.) The floras state that there is much variation of leaf shape in P. douglasii...from entire, through toothed, to pinnately-lobed. My understanding is that one distinctive extreme of the variation takes the 'typical form' of a leaf blade with overall elliptic outline, which is pinnately-lobed, having rounded lobes of more-or-less two alternating sizes. Some other characters of the species are: fairly long pedicels; calyx lobes of equal size and shape; and light-purple corollas.photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
