  • notes   These peridia or 'nests' are extremely small -- only about 1.5 mm. As they develop, they open in a star-shaped manner to reveal a single peridiole ('egg'). When conditions are right, the sticky peridiole is shot away -- sometimes as far as 5 meters. The peridium in this view has already fired its spore sac. The glossy protrusion is the inverted lining of the peridium.
