location
Near Bass Lake (Madera County, California, US)family
Onagraceae
plant community Growing in shade of lower montane mixed coniferous forestnotes Apologies for the relatively blurred image (low light!), but I wanted to post this because it's such a distinctive taxon. Formerly in its own monotypic genus, Heteroguara, this is the only Clarkia without the typically long, grooved, +/- cylindrical fruits. Instead it has shorter, asymmetrically bulged nut-like fruits. It also has relatively small flowers, while having relatively large leaves (not visible in this image, but visible in other CalPhotos posts). Overall, this is a unique and interesting species!photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
