Violaceae
plant community mixed forest, serpentinenotes the photographer suggests that this violet should be named Viola sacerdotum-pollicum. It is characterized by: (1) big, thick, many-branched flowering stems (2) semi-cleistogarmous flowers at the ends of the branches throughout late spring and summer (One can be seen above the 5.25 inch mark. It is weighted down by a jade pebble.) (Nice chasmogamous flowers appear briefly after snow melt. Photographs of these can be seen elsewhere on this site. The common name 'Ugly Violet' is used.) (3) cleistogamous flowers toward the end of summer (One with a shaggy stem arises from the base of the plant above the 4.5 inch mark.) (4) at the end of summer, detachable, roundish things, which are made up of thick scales and which often end up rolling around on the ground before giving rise to another ugly violet (A large one can be seen above the 5 inch mark.) (5) potato-shaped things, which develop below ground and which do not roll very well (One can be seen above the 6 inch mark and, also, in the inset on the lower left of the JPG. Soil that once surrounded this potato-shaped thing has been very carefully brushed away. Special care is necessary because potato-shaped things are very easily detached.) (Potato-shaped things are commonly one eighth of an inch long.) Viola bulbosa is a member of the flora of China and a very different plant. Ugly violets may provide caterpillar food for the butterfly shown in the inset in the upper right.keywords: ugly, ugliest, butterfly, branch
