notes Fossil Rib of a Baleen Whale (suborder Mysticeti), preserved in mudstone at the base of the Purisima Formation. These remains date from the early Pliocene and are about 3 to 5 million years old. Normally, this area is buried by beach sand, but occasionally a winter storm will scour the beach and expose this rib. The skull of this specimen was excavated by the California Academy of Sciences.keywords: Pliocene Tertiary Purisima
