notes This species was described from poorly preserved specimens in 1955 in the Region de Soconusco, Chiapas, Mexico. It was rediscovered along slopes of Volcan Tajumulco, Guatemala, in 1969, in sympatry with P. goebeli. In the 1970's it was incredibly common - hundreds were observed in a single day. It was found as far E as Volcan Chicabal. Despite intense searching the species has not been seen alive since 1979. Reasons for its disappearance are obscure (see Rovito et al. PNAS, 2009).photo category: Animal - Amphibian
