INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Apr 8, 2009
  • location   Banning Pass (Riverside County, California, US)
  • family Nyctaginaceae
  • notes   2013 - In 2009 I originally identified this as var. aurita using the Jepson Manual. But, after talking with Keir Morse and learning that JM1 had a mistake with the couplet that distinguishes the two varieties, and then seeing his more recent photos, I became convinced the specimens I encountered are var. villosa. Furthermore, CNDDB appears to have a number of records in the Banning Pass area that are listed as var. aurita, but actually should be var. villosa based on the updated clarification. I recommend checking Keir's photos in CalPhotos as he has posted some excellent comparisons between the two varieties.
