  • notes   Most published literature states that the 'Type Species' MacNab cypress grove on Clear Creek just downstream from the town of Whiskeytown was completely destroyed by the construction of Whiskeytown Lake. Through location of several MacNab cypresses in the park and much research, I have found that several trees were moved to homesteads in French Gulch, Old Shasta, and Redding. Also, several trees from this grove were planted at various locations in the park. Seedlings from these trees are still being transplanted throughout the park. This photo is of one of the older trees in a row of 9 large MacNab cypresses, of which during the lightning sparked fires of the summer of 2008 (Motion Fire), 1 was burned badly enough to completely kill it, 1 next to it has a few green limbs on it but will probably not survive, and the third is about 50% burned, but may make it. There will possibly be many seedlings sprout around these trees due to the 'fire regenerative' nature of this species. There are many seedlings growing around the remaining 6 healthy trees that range from 6 feet tall, down to 3 inches tall. This is a healthy, reproducing stand. My guess is that it was planted around 1959 or 1960, but may have been well before this. There may be some data on the history of this stand in archives that I have not yet reviewed. Possibly a core can be taken from the dead tree and the rings counted for age determination.
