INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  May 23, 2009
  • location   La Purisima Mission State Historic Park, north of Lompoc. (Santa Barbara County, California, US)
  • family Juncaceae
  • notes   I had come back to photograph a reed over 7 ft tall, with a section in the middle that was dramatically coiled, like a cable used to secure a bicycle. Unfortunately, a deer ate that one, and this was the best remaining corkscrew I could find. Not impressive! I've seen twisty J. textilis at Burton Mesa as well, though even less twisty than the pictured example. Small J. textilis could be mistaken for J. mexicanus, which is 'supposed to be' twisty, unlike J. textilis.
