notes Inflorescence of Phacelia longipes being visited by a Masarine pollen wasp (Pseudomasaris sp.). Note how the wasps abdomen rests right between the two styles of the Phacelia flower! These relatively uncommon wasps are unusual in that they provision their brood with pollen and nectar only, and are not carnivorous like the vast majority of other wasps. From what I understand, masarine foraging is limited to Phacelias (and a few other Hydrophylls) and Penstemons. It's fun to note that this Phacelia inflorescence is also being grasped by the coiled fruit of a Camissonia confusa plant, another uncommon species!camera Shot with a Canon D60 at f16, 1/5, ISO 100 using a Canon 50mm macro lens.
