location
Near Zmudowski State Beach (Monterey County, California, US)notes For many years these wonderful creatures had disappeared, driven to near extinction by massive human use of DDT and its subsequent dispersal into the environment. They incubate their eggs by standing on them with their warm webbed feet. The DDT made the egg shells so brittle that the parents would inadvertently break their own eggs. Our species got wise and banned DDT. Thankfully the pelicans survived and made a comeback, and once again west coast residents get to delight in the spectacle of squadrons of graceful and dignified pelicans flying along the shore.camera Shot with a Canon Digital Rebel XT at f13, 1/200, ISO 100, using a Canon 100mm macro lens.
