Polygonaceae
notes Growing in sand in the back-dunes, showing prostrate habit. Using Flora of North America treatment, this would seem to be C. cuspidata var. villosa, due to the Pt Reyes location and the presence of both straight and uncinate (hooked)awns on the involucre teeth. However, var. villosa is supposed to have most awns straigt, whereas this plant had most awns uncinate, which is more in line with var. cuspidata. Either way, the plants are very similar looking to C. pungens. I find a number of species in this complex very difficult to clearly distinguish.camera SHot with a Canon Digital Rebel XT at f8, 1/160, ISO 100, with flash, using a Canon 50mm Compact macro lens.
