location
Ring Mountain (Marin County, California, US)habitat on rocknotes This lichen is Lecanora rupicola. It grows on rocks. The white thallus is pretty distinctive when looking at crustose lichens on rocks. The apothecia color is actually a dark brown to black, but so covered with pruina that it looks bluish. This photo is interesting because all of the small areas are the same lichen. They compete at the borders with melanin production. The brown areas are probably the beginning growth of Rimularia insularis, a lichen parasite that grows only on Lecanora rupicola.camera Nikon Coolpix 995
