Mission Santa Barbara (Santa Barbara County, California, US)notes The great series of Franciscan missions is one of the most enduring and tangible elements of California history, and were the backbone of Spanish (then subsequently Mexican) rule prior to the Golden State's great influx of American prospectors that led to the culmination of Manifest Destiny and its sociopolitical impacts. The Mission community was one of the first cultural 'melting pots' and came to represent the future diversity of California's population in a tiny space.
