INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Nov 22, 2006
  • this photo depicts an animal that was captive or collected
  • photo location   Marine mammal Center, Examination Room, Crescent City, California, off Front Street
  • animal's place of origin   Originally Turtle Collected Alive on Somoa Penisula, Outside Humboldt Bay (Humboldt County, California, US)
  • order Chelonia
  • class Reptilia
  • habitat  this one washed up on the beach apparently cold /injured and taken to the Marine Mammal Center for recovery
  • notes   This sea turtle was found alive on Somoa Peninsula, a long sandy dune spit at the North Side of the Entrance to Humboldt Bay, also enclosing Arcata Bay (which is the North Humboldt Bay). A Fish & Game Warden & a Eureka Fish & Game employee keyed it out as a Pacific Ridley Seaturtle, but it died a couple of days later in captivity & I went to photograph it in Crescent City where it died at the Marine Mammal Center. I Tried to key it out with several books and it DID NOT HAVE 2 PAIRS OF PREFRONTALS on face (see photos) so I could not verify it as a Pacific Ridley. The woman that runs the marine mammal recovery center told me she was there when they keyed it out and they had same problem. Note green algae growth on / in the carapace edges/surfaces. Also this happened aftera cold storm and it was threated as a hypothermic specimen. And she told me that she had seen & identified Oregon Seaturtles several times before, including Pacific Ridleys and she thought this was a Pacific Ridley. The specimen had already died and been dismembered and partially frozen before I photographed it. Two photos included are from Warden Reilly, Fish & Game, when it was still alive on beach.
