Reef Drop-off at 20', Luzon (Philippines)family
Zanclidae
order
Perciformes
class Actinopterygii
habitat Coral reefs from East Africa to the central Indo-Pacific.notes The correct scientific name of this species has led to a great deal of discussion. In 1858 Linné described it in the 10th edition of his work, 'Systema Naturae' under two different names. On page 272, he used the name, Chaetodon canescens, and on page 273, Chaetodon cornutus. Many authors conclude that the species name, canescens, has priority. In this case though, another rule of international zoological nomenclature applies. This is the rule of 'first revision.' Cuvier, in Cuvier & Valenciennes (1831)described the genus, Zanclus, and chose the type species name cornutus. The correct name, therefore, is Zanclus cornutus (Linneaus, 1758).photo category: Animal - Fish
