INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  May 16, 2006
  • location   Lichty Mesa next to Border Field State Park (San Diego County, California, US)
  • family Boraginaceae
  • notes   Restricted to a small area on Lichty Mesa, east of Border Field State Park (on private land). Brand’s Phacelia is a diminutive annual plant that occurs on sandy soils in openings between shrubs. This species is near extinction and it has been recommended for Federally Endangered Species listing for many years Coastal back dunes and other sandy areas along the beach are the only habitat apparently supporting this small plant. Dozens of specimens were observed during field surveys in 2006. The onsite population of this extremely rare plant represents a highly significant biological resource, and this is likely the only population on private land remaining in existence.
