location
Convict Creek trail, about 3 miles from the trailhead at Convict Lake (and about 1/4 mile before the infamous creek crossing). Inyo National Forest (California, US)family
Polygonaceae
notes The habit of this specimen (particularly the low sprawling inflorescence stalks) is not necessarily typical. Many of the tall inflorescences of this specimen appeared to have been chomped off by an herbivore in the preceeding weeks. We also saw other specimens of E. latens growing on scree along the trail on the south side of Convict Lake, a few hundred feet lower (in elevation) than this specimen. They had more compact rosettes and a taller, sleeker overall appearance due to their more erect inflorescence stalks.camera Shot at f10, 1/25, ISO 100 on a Canon Digital Rebel XT with a Canon 50mm Compact macro lens.
photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
