| Reviewer's comments: | | | "This genus is currently under review by Sean Modesto and his student, Ryan Brown. This particular specimen was IDed by J. Hopson as Tetracynodon tenuis. When I visited UCMP last January, I saw no features favoring a placement w/in T. tenuis over T. darti. However, T. darti may prove to be a junior synonym of T. tenuis. If this is the case, T. tenuis has priority and would be the only valid species. This specimen and its associated specimen (a dorso-ventrally crushed skull from the same local.) are best regarded as Tetracynodon cf T. tenuis or Tetracynodon sp." |

| Reviewer's comments: | | | "To expand on the classification of Tetracynodon above, Sigogneau distinguished her T. darti from the genotype T. tenuis by (1) specimen slightly larger and (2) no nasolacrimal contact. Later, Mendrez suggested that the original genotype specimen was crushed in the snout region and that a nasolacrimal contact only existed in cynodonts. This would negate Sigogneau's basis for creating T. darti. However, the UCMP specimen shown here indeed appears to show a nasolacrimal contact (originally described by Broom & Robinson for T. tenuis). If this interpretation is correct, T. tenuis is the only therocephalian (I'm aware of) that has a nasolacrimal contact and thus can be distinguished from T. darti by at least this characteristic." |
