animal's place of origin
Uruçuí-una Ecological Station, Piauí, Cerrado region, Brazil (Brazil)notes Hoplocercus spinosus (Squamata: Hoplocercidae) retreats in small burrows on the ground, protecting the entrance with its spiny tail. It is frequently associated with rocky outcrops (arenitic or crystalline extrusions) in interfluvial dense savannas (arboreal, typical cerrado) or mosophytic forests, being less abundant in open, grass-dominated savannas. In Serra das Araras Ecological Station (Mato Grosso) many specimens were observed exposed on the ground on a cerrado/dry forest trail, after a heavy rain. Hoplocercus is a monotypic genus restricted to the Cerrado. As most of the Iguania, H. spinosus is an ambush predator on arthropods.photo category: Animal - Reptile
