  • notes   Slo.: rumena ceduljka - syn: Glaucium luteum Scop., Glaucium fulvum Sm., Glaucium serpieri Heldr. - Habitat: Seashore, pebble beach, flat terrain, calcareous ground; open, sunny location; elevation: 2 m (7 feet), average precipitation of approximately 950 mm per year, average temperature between 13-15 °C, Mediterranean phytogeographical region. - Substratum: Beach pebbles. - Comment on Flickr album Glaucium flavum: This quite common species, which blooms in eye-catching bright yellow to deep orange, is primarily found along seashores that are occasionally splashed by saltwater. It particularly favors sandy beaches and gravel. If you enjoy sunbathing early in the season, in April or May, when the sea water along the eastern Adriatic shores is still too cold for most people to swim, you will likely encounter this striking plant in bloom. - It tolerates high salt concentrations in the soil exceptionally well, far better than most other plants, leading to minimal competition along seashores. As a result, it often appears in large stands. Occasionally, this species can also be found on disturbed land inland. It belongs to the poppy family and is easily identifiable by the characteristic shape of its flower. Papaver rhoeas (common poppy) has a flower that appears superficially similar, but is red; its leaves and habitat are also distinctly different. - Literature: (x) W.K.
