K. Richt., Anacamptis picta (Loisel.) R. M. Bateman, Herorchis morio subsp picta (Loisel.) D. Tyteca & E. Klein - Habitat: Abandoned, grassy cultural land; flat, calcareous terrain, nearly full sun and dry conditions; elevation of 140 m (460 feet); average precipitation of 1.000 - 1.200 mm/year; average temperature ranges from 13 to 14 °C; Sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region. - Substratum: soil. - Comment on the Flick album Anacamptis morio ssp. picta: Anacamptis morio ssp. picta is a subspecies of the very common Anacamptis morio aggregate (formerly Orchis morio), which includes many highly variable forms in terms of the plants' habitus, flower shape, and color. Subspecies Anacamptis morio ssp. picta is primarily found in Western Europe, particularly along the French Mediterranean Sea shores. Croatia lies at the eastern border of its occurrences, where the taxon borders the distribution area of the similar Anacamptis morio ssp. caucasica. Anacamptis morio ssp. picta is gracile, taller, and has a looser inflorescence than the similar subspecies Anacamptis morio ssp. morio. Its spur curves upward (Ref. 7). Both taxa, Anacamptis morio ssp. morio and Anacamptis morio ssp. picta, grow in the same habitat. Due to many intermediate forms, determining which subspecies the found plants belong to is often challenging. Some botanists (Ref. 6) even deny the presence of Anacamptis morio ssp. picta in Kvarner Bay and consider the proper name for these plants to be Anacamptis morio ssp. caucasica. - The flowers of Anacamptis morio ssp. picta are beautiful when observed up close. This plant is widespread on the island of Krk, often growing in large groups. More than twenty plants were observed in the location of these photographs. - Ref.: (1) R.
