location
Zadar archipelago, Olib Island, northeast of the village of Olib, near the footpath to Slatinica Bay. (Zadar region, Croatia)notes Slo.: navadna kukavica - syn.: Orchis officinalis Salisb., Serapias athensis Lej., Helleborine athensis (Lej.) Hocq., Orchis athensis (Lej.) Dumort., Orchis morio subsp. athensis (Lej.) K. Richt., Orchis intermedia Meigen & Weniger. - Habitat: Abandoned grassland among olive trees, open mostly sunny place; flat terrain, calcareous ground, elevation 20 m (70 feet), average temperature 13-15 °C, average precipitation about 950 mm/year; Sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region. - Substratum: soil. - Comment on the Flick album Anacamptis morio ssp. morio: Anacamptis morio ssp. morio is undoubtedly one of the most common wild orchids in Europe. Recently, botanists moved it from the genus Orchis to the genus Anacamptis. Species Anacamptis morio is found throughout almost all of Europe, the Middle East, and parts of North Africa. The orchid is highly variable in its habit, shape of flowers, and color. At the species level, it is better to consider it as an aggregate of several taxa at a lower taxonomic level. Two subspecies, Anacamptis morio subsp. morio and Anacamptis morio subsp. picta, grow in our area (Ref. 5). The first is sturdy and fleshy, featuring a dense inflorescence and a thicker spur than the second. The second one has a much more gracile structure and lax inflorescence. Some botanists (Ref. 6) deny the presence of the Anacamptis morio ssp. picta in Kvarner Bay and consider the proper name of these plants to be Anacamptis morio ssp caucasica. Its hybrids also exist. However, we often find plants exhibiting intermediate morphological characteristics. In all these cases, determining which subspecies the found plant belongs to can be difficult or even impossible. - The flower of Anacamptis morio ssp. morio is very beautiful when observed up close. Also, I often come across grassy areas where hundreds of these beauties bloom. Such is the case, for example, on the Kvarner island of Krk. On the contrary, on the island of Olib, which is much smaller than Krk, only a single known location has been identified for these plants so far. - Ref.: (1) R.
