  • notes   Slo.: peščena turška detelja - syn.: Hedysarum arenarium Kit., Onobrychis borysthenica (Širj.) Klokov, Onobrychis brachypus Vassilcz., Onobrychis tanaitica Spreng, Onobrychis viciifolia auct. fl. Ross. - Habitat: A narrow strip of grassland located between the roadside and the forest (Pinus nigra, Fraxinus ornus, Ostrya carpinifolia, Juniperus communis), on a moderately inclined mountain slope with a southwest aspect; dry location, in partial shade; elevation 670 m (2,200 feet); average precipitation about 1,300 mm/year, average temperature 8-10 °C, Sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region. - Substratum: soil. - Comment on the Flicker's album Onobrychis arenaria: Onobrychis is a relatively large genus, with over 250 species with valid names. The subspecies Onobrychis arenaria ssp. arenaria is a Eurasian floral element distributed from Western Europe to Xinjiang (POWO). Seven species of this genus grow in Slovenia and Croatia. Onobrychis arenaria ssp. arenaria closely resembles its sister subspecies, Onobrychis arenaria ssp. tommasinii. The morphological characteristic distinguishing them most quickly is the ratio of the length of the calyx teeth to the calyx tube. In Onobrychis arenaria ssp. arenaria, this ratio ranges from 1.5 to 2.5, whereas in Onobrychis arenaria ssp. tommasinii, the teeth are longer, with a ratio of 2 to 4. The measured ratio for the plants in the photographs was approximately 1.7 (AVG=1.7, SD= 0.2, n=10, measured on five inflorescences). Thus, we identified the plants as Onobrychis arenaria ssp. arenaria. - The behavior of most Onobrychis species in my area is not very appealing. However, the inflorescences and flowers are stunning when viewed up close. - Ref.: (1) A.
