Crantz, Ajuga alpina L., Mant. - Habitat: the edge of a stony footpath, nearly flat terrain, calcareous, skeletal ground; partially sunny and dry location; elevation 7 m (23 feet); average precipitation ~ 1,000 mm/year, average temperature 12-14 °C, Sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region. - Substratum: sandy soil. - Comment about Flick's album Ajuga genevensis: Ajuga genevensis grows in European and temperate Asian countries. Four species of the genus Ajuga can be found in Slovenia, while five are present in neighboring Croatia. Ajuga genevensis is easy to identify. First, the deep blue-violet color of the flowers attracts immediate attention, followed by its distinct four-sided stem. The stem leaves and bracts are nearly identical in shape and very coarsely serrated, with the bracts often appearing nearly three-parted. We can verify our identification by checking for stolons. If the plant lacks stolons, we can confirm our identification; however, if it has them, it is likely a very similar species, Ajuga reptans, which is much more common than Ajuga genevensis. - Ref.: (1) M.A. Fischer, W.
