notes Slo.: mlahavi ježek - Syn.: Sparganium neglectum (Beeby) Schinz & Thell., Sparganium ramosum subsp. neglectum (Beeby) Neuman - Habitat: In a pond about 25 x 25 m in dimensions amid stony pastures, flat terrain, open, sunny place, calcareous ground, limestone; elevation 175 m (570 feet); average precipitations 1.200-1.500 mm/year, average temperature 12-13 deg C, Sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region. - Substratum: pond mud (underwater) - Comment of Flick album Sparganium erectum subsp. neglectum): The Sparganium genus includes about 20 very similar species, and it can be challenging to determine the specific species. One reliable way to differentiate them is by observing the shape of the fruit. There is some debate among botanists about its classification in the taxonomic system, with many considering it an independent species - Sparganium neglectum. - This plant is notable for its male and female flowers, which stand separately. The male flowers are small spherical heads with whitish anthers and are smaller than the female heads, which are also spherical with white stigmas. When ripe, they become brownish and resemble a twisted hedgehog. This is reflected in the Slovenian name 'ježek'. The word means hedgehog. - Sparganium erectum subsp. neglectum is widely distributed in Europe, North Africa, and Turkey. This aquatic plant typically grows in shallow marshes, ponds, and other shallow waters and wet areas. Unfortunately, as these habitats are inexorably disappearing, this plant is also becoming endangered. Its IUCN status is 'Near threatened'. Ref.: (1) A.
