Nyman, Kentrophyllum elatum Gasp., Kentrophyllum turbinatum Guss. - Habitat: Stony grassland with bushes and small trees, gradually overgrowing pasture; skeletal calcareous ground; dry, sunny, open place; elevation 200 m (660 feet); average precipitations 1.000 – 1.200 mm/year, average temperature 12-14 deg C, Sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region. Substratum: stony soil. Comment on Flick's album Carthamus lanatus ssp. lanatus): Carthamus lanatus ssp. lanatus is found in all countries surrounding the Mediterranean and Black Seas, as well as on the west coast of the Caspian Sea (Ref. 3). While it is native to the Mediterranean, it has become naturalized in Australia, the USA, and other regions globally. It is mainly considered a weed in the USA in agricultural and rangeland areas. It often occurs on disturbed land. The plant is heavily spined and is known to be a problematic weed in pastures. Its flower heads consist only of disk flowers and lack strap-shaped flowers. The golden-yellow color of the flowers is unique. - Ref.: (1) A. Martinči et all., Mala Flora Slovenije (Flora of Slovenia - Key) (in Slovenian), Tehnična Založba Slovenije (2007), p 687. (2) T.
