  • notes   Slo.: sivkastobela črna meta - Syn.: Marrubium candidissimum - Habitat: stony pasture, almost bare rock, slightly inclined Karst plateau, south aspect, open, sunny, wind-swept, calcareous place, elevation 375 m (1.230 feet); average precipitations ~ 1.200-1.400 mm/year, average temperature 11-13 deg C, Sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region. Substratum: stony soil. Comment on Flick album Marrubium incanum: Marrubium incanum is an exceptional plant that can thrive in the dry Mediterranean climate, even in almost totally rocky environments. Its abundant hairiness effectively prevents water evaporation from its cells, keeping it from drying out. The plant's serrated, silvery foliage forms a lush mound and remains vibrant despite the heat and drought. However, in the shimmering hot air of the summer midday, the plant's color blends in with the mostly bare white stone surroundings and is not easy to spot. In such conditions, it is only easily noticeable when it grows in large numbers. This plant is mainly found around the Adriatic Sea, particularly along the Croatian coast and islands, as well as in central Italy. A few rare specimens have also been observed in other European countries (Ref. 3). The stony Karst plateaus of the southeast part of the island Krk are almost ideal locations to encounter this plant. FCD: Croatia, island Krk, next to the hiking trail from Stara Baška to Jurandvor southeast of Mt. Mali Hlam.
