  • family Apiaceae
  • notes   Slo.: velecvetna vehrica - syn.: Caucalis grandiflora L. - Habitat: grassland, among bushes and olive trees; slightly inclined sea shore, west aspect; partly semiruderal, calcareous, skeletal, well-drained ground; mostly open, sunny place; elevation ~10 m (33 feet); average precipitations 900 - 1.000 mm/year, average temperature 12-14 deg C, Sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region. - Substratum: soil. - Comment: Orlaya grandiflora is a lovely annual plant. It is one of the most striking and distinct umbels of the Mediterranean. The word 'lace' in its English vernacular name is not there for no reason. The plant has flattish panicles of pure white flowers, which have delicate structure and are very beautiful when looked at closely. Sometimes the plant forms large and compact stands, and looking at them is just as attractive as the details of its flowers. - Orlaya grandiflora is a plant of the north Mediterranean, but today it is known from a much wider area, mainly thanks to horticulture. It is a recipient of the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. - The seashore around the village of Miholašćica is often decorated with this species. In Croatia, it is quite common and spread over the entire eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea and the islands. Less often, it can also be found in the more continental part of the country. - Ref.: (1) W.K.
