location
Along John Nicholas Trail south of Lake Ranch Reservoir (Santa Clara County, California, US)family
Hypericaceae
notes Back-lit view of the upper (adaxial) sides of leaves of Hypericum perforatum, showing translucent glands evenly distributed throughout the leaves and the somewhat blurry shadows of the tiny black glands (also called 'black nodules') positioned mainly along the margins of the lower (abaxial) sides of the leaves. The black nodules are also typically seen along the margins of the petals (e.g. see here). Two (rather technical) papers discussing some of the physiology & chemistry of these glands are Zobayed et al.(2006) and Ciccerelli et al.(2001). Black glands/nodules occur in members of Hypericum sect. Hypericum, which in addition to H. perforatum also includes the CA-native species H. concinnus and H. scouleri. photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
