  • notes   Slo.: no name - syn.: Satureja juliana L., Clinopodium julianum (L.) Kuntze, Satureja hirsuta C. Presl, Satureja parviflora C. Presl, Satureja sophia Steud., Satureja spicata Crantz, Satureja virgata Stokes - Habitat: moderately inclined hill slope, south-west aspect; dry, open, sunny, stony place; semiruderal terrain (route of underground water supply pipes); average precipitations ~ 1.000 mm/year, average temperature 12-14 deg C, elevations 40 m (130 feet), Sub-Mediterranean phytogeographical region. - Substratum: dry, stony, nutrient-poor ground. - Comments (pertain to pictures in Flicker album Micromeria juliana): Micromeria juliana is an aromatic, small sub-shrub, like most Micromeria species, with long-time known medical and culinary properties. This plant is typically found in the Mediterranean region, growing in the same area as olive trees (Olea europaea). The species name 'Juliana' does not refer to the Julian Alps, the southeast part of the Alps, as it might initially seem. Instead, it is named after a low mountain called Monte San Giuliano (also known as Monte Pisano) in Toscana, Italy (Ref.2). The plant has tiny flowers, only a few millimeters long, which is reflected in one of its synonym names, 'parviflora' (in Latin, meaning 'with small flowers'). Bees, butterflies, and other similarly sized insects are too large for pollination, so ants and possibly other tiny insects are responsible for this task. Even an ant appears large compared to the flowers. - Ref.: (1) T. Nikolić, Flora Croatica, Vaskularna flora Republike Hrvatske, Vol. 3. Alfa d.d..
