Buteo lineatus (Red-shouldered Hawk) |
| This is a tricky photo for a California database, as it is a Florida subspecies (B. lineatus alleni) that would never be seen in the Pacific states. Our Redshoulder subspecies is "elegans." The main plumage distinction here is the lack of marking on the belly. Calif juvenile Shoulders have thick dark brown streaking on a light brown surface. Occasionally the streaking gets so dense as to make the underbelly look vaguely checkered in light and dark browns. |
