Cephalanthus occidentalis var. californicus (Button Bush, Buttonbush, California Buttonbush) | There is only one species of Cephalanthus in California according to Hickman; the photographer's location is consistent with the known range. The distinct inflorescence in the image is also characteristic of the species. Perhaps Mr. Potts, knowing that the genus had only one species in the state, did not take the trouble to annotate the slide with the species name since that would be unneeded. |
