Chorizanthe staticoides (Turkish Rugging) |
Chorizanthe leptotheca (Peninsular spineflower) | This set of six photos, all taken from the San Jacinto Mtns, off hwy 243 near Esperanza fire area, are of C. leptotheca, not C. staticoides, for the following reasons:
- the involucres are the slender ones of C. leptotheca, and not the shorter ones of C. staticoides;
- the involucre clustering is more open, typical of C. leptotheca.
The plants are thinly hairy, ruling out C. xanti var. leucotheca.
C. leptotheca is the common species at San Jacinto Mountain. C. staticoides is a coastal taxon, with the nearest voucher well to the west.
