John Marquis has been hiking southern California and photographing native flora since the 1990s, when he earned his degree in geology from the California Institute of Technology. He currently lives in La Crescenta, and works for the Southern California Earthquake Center performing science outreach. Though he received some schooling in both disciplines, the majority of his botanical and photographic knowledge are self-taught, motivated by his observations of native plants in the field.
