Crossosomataceae
notes A branch of the distinctive shrub Crossosoma bigelovii...with leaves, flowers, and developing fruits. Freshly opened flowers have five white petals which often fade to a red-tinged color as they age. Within the petals are a whorl of numerous (> 15) stamens, surrounding a cluster of carpels which, in fruit, develop into 1 to 4 turgid follicles (typically 2 or 3) that are reminiscent of a medieval jester's cap. These are stiff and divaricately branched shrubs, with densely clustered, mostly mucronate leaves and a lovely, finely-peeling, silver-gray bark. photo category: Plant - shrub
