| Reviewer's comments: | | | | "In this area of the Siskiyou Mtns. you will find both typical CA Red Fir, and the N. CA Noble Fir variety. I've noticed that the Red Fir has the typical red bark with the typical furrows and "diamond" patterns in the bark, while the "Noble" Fir variety has the typical gray Noble Fir bark with the "block" patterns on the boles of the larger trees. James R. Griffin and William B. Critchfield referred to Franklin 1964, and Parker 1963, when stating that typical Noble Fir doesn't extend south into CA, but that intermediate forms of Noble Fir and Shasta Red Fir are common in the Siskiyou Mtns.in their book "The Distribution of Forest Trees in California. Sawyer and Thornburgh were "local legends" per botanists that I chatted with at the Happy Camp Ranger District Station. (I grew up in Happy Camp from late 1972 through 1990ish). Sawyer and Thornburgh (1969) state that the largest stand of "Noble Fir" south of the Klamath River may be on North Trinity Mountain, Humboldt County. There are also Noble Fir in the Marble Mtn. Wilderness Area (Lewis 1966)" |
